This big fellow was right beside the trail, as I started up Penguin Hill.  Funny birds, because they are often close by, but spook only if you look directly at them.  This time I skied past him,  managed to get  the camera out with my back turned to him, and to get the settings and zoom dialed in before I turned around.   By then he had lost interest in me!  The zoom is only 5x on this camera, so I was pleased that he was this close.  There is a second photo of the ski conditions, which were excellent.

Pileated woodpecker: pileated from Latin meaning “wearing a felt hat.”
