
Ice on Penguin Hill

Amazing to have so much snow both before and after yesterday’s depressing rain! There was at least 10 cm before we left Wanakiwin yesterday and at least another 10 last night. These are very conservative estimates.
The primary trails were in very good shape today, except for a few notable icy sections left over from yesterday’s thaw: Penguin hill, (marked
with a green check mark on the ski conditions page) about two thirds of the way up, Ridge near Keogan, and some icy sections on a few downhills on Ridge and near Black Lake .

Based on this photo it does look like they tried to fix the dangerous situation I encountered; it seems the ice wall is gone. I don’t think I am being an alarmist, I think this was the most dangerous trail situation I have ever seen in the park considering nature and position of the problem, lack of warning and the fact that it was on a groomed, primary trail having been classified as “good to very good”. I thought it looked much worse in person, though! It was certainly still dangerous at 4:00 and was not clearly marked. I hope there were no injuries.
Blimey it looks horrible I am glad that I spend the day shovelling and not skiing – especially as the skiing at Lac Philipe on Thursday-Friday was just perfect
