I once stopped our car and “assisted” one of these across a road. Fortunately I held it well way from me as it was a snapping turtle I believe. It sure tried to snap me, so I put it down rather quickly. Friends later told me never, ever, pick up a snapping turtle as you can lose a finger or two.

This one was a rescue from 4 years ago when we were stopped by two huge snapping turtles crossing Moodie Dr (Ottawa). These really are dinosaur-like creatures – and do not assume for a second that they are slow. Their SNAP is lightning fast – you will lose if you’re in range. http://bvtblogs.blogspot.com/2007/04/big-snapper-rescue.html

Just last weekend my daughter and I saved a snapping turtle 3 times. We named him “Zig-Zag” because he just couldn’t seem to decide which side of the road he wanted to be on.
