My very favorite bird, the one contending for the most beautiful song among North American birds. Yes! A Hermit Thrush!! This was spotted through the kitchen window. He was sifting for bugs at the foot of the stairs! In all the years I’ve listened to their songs (in a nearby oak ridge and also in 4 locations in Gatineau Park) I’ve never seen one close enough to photograph. I can’t believe this bird was outside our door! I wish my mother were still alive so that I could phone her and tell her!

I love hearing them every summer. They are the characteristic still-day, high-woods sound. The only time I see them is at this point in spring as they forage the garden. Every year they are here for several days and then gone. Two were digging around yesterday.

What a thrill, and I agree that it’s moments like these we miss our Mums.
