We have numerous squirrels, including red, black and gray. This one though is really distinctive! He is MUCH much bigger than a red squirrel, and is the only one with this unusual coloring. Any ideas? Apparently Red Squirrels don’t mate with Eastern Gray Squirrels.
Possibly natural variation of some sort? We have a grey squirrel that visits that has noticeably red ear-tips and I think maybe some red in his tail?
(Okay, yes–have poked around squirrel genetics nerd website and it appears that “red/cinnamon/brown morphs” are uncommon but well-documented.)
