It’s getting harder to tell them apart but I’m pretty sure this is one of the chicks. There are still three loons on the lake. Dad seems to have fled the scene, but Mom is still helping the kids out. The chicks need to be flying pretty soon.
Flying, and especially take-off isn’t their strong suit, although it is better than walking on land (which they cannot do ). Even adults need a long “runway” and barely clear the shore when they finally get lift. The chicks have to practice flapping for some time before they are strong enough to fly. I haven’t heard any flapping but perhaps they are practicing on the other side of the lake. It can get quite noisy!
So beautiful, and great to see they have survived so far. Is learning to fly a progression, or do they just fly and go?
