Mushrooms on the forest floor  – beautifully camouflaged.   I tried to identify them via the Internet but there were over a thousand varieties to choose from!

Hi Jo-ann: Because the mushrooms are so old and past it I’m guessing but … my guess is that that they are a member of the Scleroderma grouping which are like puffballs in that they start off as a ball full of black spores and then blow the spores up through their top. It appears that what your picture is showing the aftermath of the explosion after they blew their tops off. They could have been Potato Eathballs (scleroderma bovista) or Earthballs (scleroderma cepa). But that’s still a guess. You seem to be having a great summer. All the best… Read more »
