This familiar, national rodent thoughtfully crawled out of the water so that I could take his photo. This was on the North Loop this afternoon. It was one of the nicest skate skis of the year: the snow in the skate lane was clean, fast, firm and very controllable. There were a few icy patches, but even they were fine. Unlike yesterday there was only one car at P9 and almost no one at P8. I had tucked Garry’s canoe hat in my bag, and for a while skied to the accompaniment of a steady rain pattering on the brim. In addition to beavers, there were rowdy geese and stealthy ducks. No herons, yet.

What do herons signal, in the natural scheme of things?
Please keep skiing as I love your posts. I have double knee replacements so I can only do classic. As such my season ended a couple of weeks ago as i can’t do uneven, but I absolutely love hearing about your joy continuing.
They are a beautiful, large, reclusive bird that spends the spring, summer and fall in our area. Most peaceful lakes, swamps and ponds have a pair. There is something primal about them. I followed a nest cam last year hosted by Cornell University, which made me love these birds even more. It was fascinating. Here is a link to the highlights of the nesting season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH5K4tjjBjs
Thanks, Rob!
