There seem to be three loons this year. Two are a bit raucous, with lots of vocalizations and water chases. This one was off on his/her own while the other two were partying. No chicks this year for sure. Interesting fact: My Merlin Bird App calls loons “Great Northern Divers”.
They are so beautiful! I’m now following another peregrine falcon pair in Australia who have just started mating, so I will see the whole process again. It is now an obsession.
Lorraine – I get the obsession! One year I followed a heron web cam, starting with the courtship and nest building and finishing many weeks later when all the chicks eventually fledged. It was fascinating, compelling and sometimes terrifying. Unfortunately the perfect tree blew down the following year so Cornell no longer had a handy viewing spot for setting up the camera. Luckily it blew down before nesting season.
