Loons often do this maneuver but they were also taking turns doing a similar but more continuous walk-on-water routine this week. Is this to strengthen their feet and wings for their laborious take-offs?
None of these loons have chicks. They are a social group varying in numbers from 1 to 4, and have been here off and on all season. When they are “off” they are probably on one of two nearby lakes (less than a km as the crow flies).
What a great shot. Is there any way to know if they are couples or singles?
